Tuning in again! I've been here for 5 years too and it's wild.
thank you for the tag and I like your hair like this! (insert old person emoji)
I did not like House in the Cerulean Sea mostly because of the language and the writing - it came across too preachy and repetitive. but this makes it much worse.
I literally had no idea there was such a ridiculous price discrepancy. Jeez.
Leave the mortal coil? It's SHUFFLE OFF, Susan. SHUFFLE OFF.
TREVELYAN?????? is this dragon age fic
🍊 Blacktop Wasteland and Razorblade Tears are both also incredible. I work at a library and someone who reads so differently from I do and I kept just gushing over SA Cosby’s protagonists.
Oh dang I have to check out our lady of the artilects
Actually paused the video to read Undercover (great choice) so this comment is a bit late, BUT what really helped me get into short stories was by listening to short story podcasts. I Just started with recommended/best of year lists, or by searching for episodes featuring authors i already liked and found new podcasts through that & then through those podcasts, new authors! I like Levar Burton Reads, Pseudopod, Lightspeed, Uncanny Magazine, Nightlight... Probably a lot of stuff I'm forgetting.
My wife has Ehlers-Danlos and thinks that the author got the completely wrong disease for her MC lol. Does not sound like ED. We think it is Klein-Waardenburg syndrome, which has the hair discoloration, weak hands/arms, etc.... sounds a lot closer to Violet's symptoms. In either case, these are both genetic disorders, and would not be caused by the mother getting sick during pregnancy.
Started reading The Final Girl Support Group and I’ve been contemplating whether or not to get this book for a WHILE. Thanks so much for this review, I’m ABSOLUTELY gonna grab it the next time I’m out!!
Rachel not liking Book Thief breaks my heart but I respect your opinions and do see where you're coming from.
Punderworld is so good!
Wow...there are no words...and good songs/bands/singers are put together with whatever this is? Extra ick. The writer was trying to hard to be edgy 🦉 An owl is the closest I have to a black bird emoji
I'm shocked that The garden came from Tomi Adeyemi, because personally I find The Legacy of Orisha quite good.
I’ve heard COBAB is great!
There are an awful lot of people who think educating kids (teens and middle schoolers) about sex (including what sexual abuse is and how to have safe sex) is the abuse. But among them are a sizable minority who also want to brush allegations of literal child rape under the rug so that it does not make their family or their church look bad or even to protect the perpetrators from legal and material professional/reputation/social consequences. It’s so not about kids safety. A book on having safe sex and avoiding intimate partner abuse, sexual assault, and rape is not a danger to children. Silence shame and taboos about being open about teens developing sexual feelings, or being queer, or being abused, or having sex are dangers to children. Self-report studies show that 20% of adult females and 5-10% of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident; During a one-year period in the U.S., 16% of youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized; Over the course of their lifetime, 28% of U.S. youth ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized; Children are most vulnerable to CSA between the ages of 7 and 13; According to a 2003 National Institute of Justice report, 3 out of 4 adolescents who have been sexually assaulted were victimized by someone they knew well. It’s comical that given statistics like these, we are talking about kids being harmed by a sex education book that is not even on any curriculum, that other than being aimed at LGBT teens and perhaps mentioning Grinder, is not materially more explicit or sex positive than some sexual education curricula used in the U.S. and around the world. Imagine trying to keep sex education books from children who are currently being sexually victimized or are highly vulnerable to being victimized already because you don’t want them to be harmed (spiritually or mentally) by a sex education book. That is truly insane.
Every time I re-watch this video, I cringe at the part with “TRUE discrimination”. How far does a person’s head have to be up their own ass, that they cannot see what discrimination looks like? Oh no, being called out for your own behavior… clearly the worst thing to happen to a person. Honestly, it’s like a toddler being told that they can’t have dessert because they punched their sibling and then that toddler having a fit and screaming “I hate you” at their parents. We know you hate us, JM Buttersworth. Now shut up and take your timeout.
☠️
once again, raised by my mother who would never bother to consent with ANY thing i wanted to do, including read. What happens to kids who have parents shoving indoctrinations down their throats? Suffocating them with false information, conservative perspective, and religion? What about kids raised by parents who dont give enough of a shit about them to let them read? My mom barely even came home to feed us. Do they suspect she cared that i missed field trips cuz she wouldnt sign forms? Or that she would sign an approval for me to read? Not only that, but what about books that i read that helped me understand her abuse? Or my sexual trauma. What happens to kids being assaulted (i was 6 BTW), who are being told to hide it, to let it happen, or who arent being allowed to understand it? I needed those books (books like speak, or a child called it). I don't know how i would have survived without them. This isnt a perfect world. I'm instead teaching my kids what is appropriate for them, to help them learn and make decisions for themselves.
You should check out every day by David levithan it deals with body jumping in such a cool way. It discussed gender and identity in ways I never considered as a cis person
I feel so ashamed for not being able to have friends due to my Anxiety Disorder and OCD. I found comfort in reading but I wish I was brave enough to trust other people again and learn to make friends, read and drink coffee or just be a part of something 😅
when i read the line at 8:18 i felt like i was reading yellowface. like how in that book the protagonist seems to think that marginalized people are actually celebrated now. and mmiw came straight to my mind. also you would think that as a true crime podcaster the author would realize that the well-off white people that the killer is targeting are exactly the ones who get talked about the most
I grew up in Brevard county, went to Melbourne High School, and read Slaughterhouse Five in my history and Catch .22 and it was honestly some lit that shined a beacon on our minds in a county that prides itself on violent anti-intellectualism, ignorance and bigotry. My dream was to be a teacher in my community, but the school system is just so horrendous that I couldn’t ethically bring myself to teach… lies to keep my job. I had to move to NE (after 8 generations in Florida, not counting the Muscogee) and I wish I could return to my homeland everyday. These kids give me hope, and if any of them see this post I want them to know there’s people in their county that care about and support them. The people who destroyed our home will not succeed.
Omg, I know that flag, I can almost see it from my house and have to pass it all the time to get to work. I wanna burn it every time I see it, and anytime I have people visit from out of state I feel like I have to, like, disclaimer it whenever we see it. 😢 Also, I'm not a horror girlie (with books), but just knowing you scored it so high makes me want to read this one.
She reminds me of the Arsenic & Old Lace grannies, except blunt 😂
Helios, Birdman, Sunspot (Marvel), Zoran A.K.A Sun God (also Marvel), Sunfire (Marvel), The Teletubbies sun baby...
I legit want a campy TV adaptation of this. Romanticizing white male serial killers: broke. Romanticizing little old lady serial killers: woke. (Joking, joking.) But seriously, it would be such a great campy dark comedy series.
☠️❤
This just made me more excited to read the book omg
I would love to see you review the OG dragonrider books - the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Dragonflight is the first one. It has definitely aged, but from what you have said about the plot of Fourth Wing, it's like Yarros read Anne McCaffrey's Pern books and wrote a crappier, wattpad version. Dragonflight has a solid plot, has solid worldbuilding (science fantasy, but you don't get the science until later books). I am so curious if you reviewed those how you would compare the two worlds/plots!
my so it goes tattoo requires me to watch this video! i LOOOOVE this book!
The title alone makes me want to read it haha
tbh i just don't think the entire scenario could've ever worked in a non-toxic way. there isn't a way to portray him being weirdly fascinated with her scars that doesn't come off as him not completely regretting what he did.
while listening to this i clocked it really early on before you pointed it out that this 100% was coming off as if you read a fanfic for a series you never read/watched/etc before. i used to be very into myth from different cultures and even being able to follow certain things as you were describing them it seems to me like the author was not fully comfortable leaving "fanfic mode." wouldn't be surprised if that's why myth or fairy tale retellings are more popular with them because it's easy for them to rely on the existing tropes, characterizations, and plot points instead of building something completely new from scratch.
Maude kind of reminds me of a very odd mixture of Carl from Llamas with hats and Hannibal from Hannibal Lecter, just as an older woman
ok a spicy book series I'm loving so far is the Arden St. Ives series by Alexis Hall (who is one of my favorite authors). superficially it's basically fifty shades but gay and like... better. I love how alexis hall crafts characters, they're always deeply flawed in fun and enjoyable ways. another series by the same author is the "something fabulous" series which is regency era and completely ridiculous, like absolutely ludicrous plot-wise but really fun and again with those characters that are all slightly terrible and incredibly endearing.
Why does this sound somewhat less like the myth of King Midas and somewhat more like Goldfinger?
Yesyes, I live in the Philippines and my mother can only speak Tagalog, she loves to read but can't accessany American stories because they're expensive (were not poor here but were not rich) and because there's no Tagalog translations, I've been learning English for the past year or so so sometimes Ill read her but Its still difficult because we don't have much money to buy the stories, even if they are translated they are expensive (game of thrones for example) (sorry for poor Englis usually I use grammarly but i don't have it on my phone) I quite like the book community though, when I do get to read a book I get to practice my English in review spaces, I've gotten far so far which is nice
🪦
Funny thing about the better writter part and swirched pov, INSTANTLY BEAUTY AND BEAST SWITCH, A BOOK I CANT GET! THX TO THIS WRITTING! IMMA GO TO AO3 IM DONE WIRH BOOKS
if you liked this collection and have never seen the play/movie arsenic and old lace, i highly recommend it. the ladies in a&ol are way less intentional than maude, but equally gruesome and comic!
☠️
light choking is absolutely not vanilla considering there is no safe choking and it will lead to brain damage
☠️💗🫶🏻
Amazing review! You are such an insightful, informed, and eloquent reviewer
Yay! Thank you!
"confronting ageism in a very nonthreatening way" i'm not sure i'd call maud nonthreatening.... 😆 ☠
Lmaoooo I swear I meant thematically but yes maud is unfortunately a threat 😩😩😩
☠️
🧡 I really want to read Razorblade Tears by this same author, I hear nothing but good things. I'm definitely putting this book on my list. 🧡
Hope you enjoy it!
This book was a nightmare and a waste of time
I second this lol
